Getting started

  • Welcome to the wiki that we will use just for our class. You will need to create an account so that you can edit and create pages. Here is a MediaWiki FAQ page to help with technical questions about the wiki, such as how to create new pages. FYI our class wiki is not the same as the BIG Wikipedia that everyone in the world uses. You will need an account on the BIG wiki, too.
  • You will also need a free account on Dropbox
  • The class schedule is here. We will probably have to move a few things around and make changes to the schedule, so please check this often. I wouldn't suggest printing it out.
  • Add your key terms pages to the key terms directory here. I will begin adding terms for you to write about starting in week 3, but there is room for you to choose a few of your own terms from the reading.
  • Add links/images to the Resources page. This page should feature content that adds to the course material in some way -- e.g. relevant stories from the news, memes or other images and a description with an image credit, online guides or other resources, etc.

This week

Get familiar with the course. I realize using a wiki as the course website could be confusing and frustrating. Try to keep an open mind.

For Thursday, please read John Scalzi's series of posts: “Straight White Male: The Lowest Difficulty Setting There Is”, a follow-up post, and a final follow-up post. Also read Lisa Nakamura's response, “Queer Female of Color: The Highest Difficulty Setting There Is?”

Key terms for this week: privilege, gamer culture, patriarchy
