Finding articles to edit for the Wikipedia project

I started a list of possible articles for creation here:

  • Amy Goodloe - influential in creating resources online for lesbians in the 1990s. created lesbian.org, first website for lesbians. Possible sources: The Internet for Women and interview here
  • Rosie Cross founder of Australian geekgirl magazine. Possible sources: The Internet for Women or Virtual Nation
  • GLOradio was "The Number One Webcasting Service for the Global Lesbian, Gay, Bi & Transgender Community" in the 1990s.
  • Tania Katan - queer author, playwright, activist, breast cancer survivor, created #ItWasNeverADress -- Her memoir My One-Night Stand With Cancer has received the Stonewall Book Award, Publishing Triangle Award, and Lambda Literary Award.
  • Jes Baker is a blogger, body positive activist, and author of Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls.
  • Body positive movement should exist, don't you think? possible sources: "Towards a Radical Body Positive" and "Mom bares body, heart to teach lesson in self-love"

Week 4

Wikipedia week!

Tuesday

Please read the items listed on the Class schedule page for Tuesday. You will also need to create an account on Wikipedia.org by Tuesday.

1. In class on Tuesday, please use this link to join the course website we have on Wikipedia.org. This will keep track of your user names and organize who is editing what article.

2. Also on Tuesday, we will discuss how to find articles that need creation or major work, and how to identify suitable topics for new articles.

Thursday

On Thursday, response paper #1 is due. Check the assignment guidelines in the syllabus and look in the shared Dropbox folder (in the response papers folder) for samples so you can see what I am looking for.

On Thursday, meet in Bronstein Hall for a Wikipedia workshop with Dr. Famiglietti. By Thursday, you should choose your article or articles that you will work on for the Wikipedia project. In addition, I am asking you to bring 2 to 3 possible sources you could reference as you contribute to your Wikipedia article(s). The sources could be links, books, photocopies of library books, PDF files, or something -- you need to actually have them with you on Thursday. Sources may not include works of your own original research, other Wikipedia articles, or anything from social media except in special cases. Wikipedia has outlined what counts as a reliable source here. Remember your goal is to provide a neutral summary of knowledge that already exists on a topic -- not contribute analysis or create new knowledge.

Please type the article(s) you will work on and the citation information for your 2 to 3 sources in your Sandbox page by Thursday.

February 9: Love Your Body Fair Tuesday Feb. 9 in Campion during free period

February 10: The Sister Thea Bowman Lecture Series presents The World According to She. Feb. 10 at 4pm in Forum Theater. More info here.

February 11: Response paper #1 due

February 11: Jennifer Finney Boylan, author of She's Not There: A Life in Two Genders and Stuck in the Middle With You will be speaking at Saint Joseph's University on Thursday, February 11, 2016. You have two opportunities to hear her: [1.] Her talk "Trans and the Church" will happen at 11:00 AM (Free Period) in Foley Center. Lunch will be provided. [2.] Her reading from She's Not There will happen at 6:30 PM in Foley Center.

NEW DATE: February 16 in the Banquet Hall in Campion, SJU will host a Beautiful Me workshop, which is a self-esteem program designed to educate women by promoting appreciation for their genuine qualities, accurate self awareness, and the satisfaction of helping others. You have to RSVP, and here's the link. This program is provided free of charge from the Hance Family Foundation.

February 18: SJU Career Fair, Athletics Center, 10:00 AM-1:30 PM

February 19: TEMPLE UNIVERSITY: Tropes vs. Women in Video Games: Anita Sarkeesian on Gaming Culture, Friday, February 19, 4:00 PM. Paley Library Lecture Hall, 1210 Polett Walk, Ground Floor. Join media critic Anita Sarkeesian as she discusses sexism in gaming, ranging from the portrayal of female characters in popular video games, to the culture of harassing and excluding women from gaming communities, particularly online. February 27: Michelle Moravec + Wikipedia edit-a-thon

March 8: TEMPLE UNIVERSITY: Thinking Historically About Game Representation: Adrienne Shaw on Gaming Production, Audiences, and Texts. Tuesday, March 8, 3:30 PM. Digital Scholarship Center, Paley Library, 1210 Polett Walk, Ground Floor. Join Adrienne Shaw, assistant professor of Media Studies and Production at Temple University, for a conversation on her latest research: a feminist and historical analysis of gender in gaming production, audiences, and texts.
